Top 10 Performances in 2014

The year 2014 is over and traditionally, here is another MUST list of top performers from movies. I've divided this list in awards-like sequence, separately for actors/actresses, lead/supporting.

Top 5 Supporting Actresses
5. Rene Russo in Nightcrawler
4. Mackenzie Foy in Interstellar
3. Emma Stone in Birdman
2. Tilda Swinton in Snowpiercer
1. Keira Knightley in The Imitation Game

Keira was the biggest surprise this year, her quiet, natural performance was a definite highlight. I was also unexpectedly charmed by young actress Machenzie Foy, who's performance in Interstellar was just heartwarming and extremely emotional.

Top 5 Supporting Actors
5. Zac Efron in Neighbors
4. Matt Bomer in The Normal Heart
3. Jim Parsons in The Normal Heart
2. Edward Norton in Birdman
1. J.K. Simmons in Whiplash

No doubt, Simmons is winning it, with the most breakthrough performance this year. Norton comes close to second. Probably, the most surprising nomination here is Efron, who's portrayal of Teddy Sanders I found very entertaining and funny.

Top 5 Lead Actresses
5. Rose Leslie in Honeymoon
4. Shailene Woodley in The Fault in Our Stars
3. Kristen Wiig in The Skeleton Twins
2. Felicity Jones in The Theory of Everything
(huuuge gap)
1. Rosamund Pike in Gone Girl

I think I don't need much to say about Rosamund's performance. Definitely my favorite this year, and probably for such a long time. Happy that Leslie and Woodley made this list. Definitely one of memorable performances this year.

Top 5 Lead Actors
5. Miles Teller in Whiplash
4. Bill Hader in The Skeleton Twins
3. Jack Gyllenhaal in Nightcrawler
2. Michael Keaton in Birdman
1. Benedict Cumberbatch in The Imitation Game

Differentiating between Cumberbatch and Keaton was the hardest part of this list. I genuinely liked Michael, but there was part of me that still remembered Benedict's sensational acting and the last scene of The Imitation Game. I finally decided that he would prevail with a minor advantage.

Best Cast
5. The Imitation Game
4. Pride
3. Gone Girl
2. The Grand Budapest Hotel
1. Birdman

Interesting that Imitation Game is 5th in BP but you gave it acting wins, loving the spread of appreciation here! And I adore the inclusion of Normal Heart actors in supp. actor!

Good choices, I especially like that you picked Birdman as the Best Cast. That ensemble was terrific. Seems like I need to check out 'Honeymoon'!

Interesting, right? The fact is that, The Imitation Game has two outstanding performances, while the others, I consider to have equivalently good acting, especially in case of Pride, which has a huge cast of all good acts [it also had a surprise moment, tbh]

Even though, Birdman did not came as first in any category, each and every actor was brilliant there, including Zach Galifianakis, who I am not loving much in general.

Thanks Shane. What can I say, Birdman is outstanding in every sense.

Do check out Honeymoon. It's quite a good movie. I definitely enjoyed it and Leslie is very good.

lol I love the "huge gap" in Best Actress. I agree. I love all the picks (and that there's no Boyhood. That's nice)

Thank you! Yes, she was, one of few great things in Interstellar. Teller had his best performance in Whiplash.
