10 Best Title Sequences of All Time

Making a good show is hard job, but it is not (probably) easy to make a proper opening Title Sequence. According to IMDB list I have watched 82 TV Shows during my whole life. Some are good, some - bad, some are my favorites, the rest not. But I've never seen most of their opening credits from the beginning to the end. However, there are few of them, I enjoy not less then the show itself.

I present my top 10 favorite and best Title Sequences of all time. I pick each because of three reasons: good music, good production and relevance to show. Here we go:

10 Huff

Music: Composed by W.G. Snuffy Walden. A very beautiful and soulful song, that perfectly accords the sequence itself.
Format: Live action, without actors.

Sequence obliquely symbolizes the main character and his problems.

9 The Big Bang Theory

Music: by Barenaked Ladies. Cheerful song with funny lyrics about the evolution and "human adventure"
Format: Animation.

The song is very beautiful, funny & nice to listen. It somehow prepares me for really enjoyable time with The Big Bang Theory, however it has nothing in common with the show.

8 American Horror Story

Music: created by Kyle Cooper. It's not actual music, or score but more bunch of creepy sounds.
Format: Pictures from the show.

This is the scarriest opening sequence of all time. I think the show itself is not as scary as the titles of season 1. Whenever I watched this alone, I turned the sounds off, because it scared crap out of me. And this is mainly what makes the title sequence brilliant - gives any reason to watch the show, if you love horrors of course.

7 Modern Family

Music: Genius, whoever created this couple of seconds of beauty
Format: Live action, includes actors.

I love this show in every sense. Even this very simple opening credits make me happy with cheerful music and great look at actors.

6 Six Feet Under

Music: Thomas Newman. Brilliant, weird music with perfectly matched with the whole idea of the show
Format: Live action/animation

Even opening sequence is satiric in this show. Title gives a look at processing of dead bodies before funeral.

5 Desperate Housewives

Music: composer Danny Elfman.
Format: Animation

Desperate Housewives’ opening sequence uses famous art works or styles to reflect the work of housewives from Adam and Eve onwards, culminating in a Pop Art.

4 Mad Men

Music: A Beautiful Mine by RJD2.
Format: Animated

Mad Men’s opening sequence is extraordinarily smart, showing a man plunging from a high rise building and being caught James Bond-credit-sequence-style by an elegant woman’s foot.

3 Friends

Music: I'll be there for You by The Rembrandts.
Format: Live action, includes actors.

An amazing opening sequence including all actors dancing and having fan in the fountain. This title design has been an inspiration to many many shows later.

2 Game of Thrones

Music:  by Ramin Djawadi.
Format: Computer generated animation.

Game of Thrones has one of the best theme musics of all time in TV history. Title sequence gives a look at a three-dimensional map of the series's fictional world. I've seen this credits even more times then the show itself.

1 Dexter

Music: by Rofle Kent.
Format: Live action, with main character Dexter Morgan

The smartest, darkest, well directed and thought title sequence of all time. Named as Morning Routine shows daily breakfast and preparation time of a man that looks like a murder scene very much. Theme music emphasizes the blackly comic side of the show, while the dripping blood, dripping ketchup, spurting orange juice and sliced bacon emphasizes the violent side.

Awesome to see Game of Thrones and American Horror Story here, I completely agree that those credits were even scarier than actual show.
